Lifestyle Motherhood Session with Fionnuala.
From the moment Fionnuala opened her front door, I wanted to move in! Her home is a photographer's dream, the colours, the texture, the amount of natural light, EVERYTHING!
We chose their master bedroom for the main part of her Motherhood session to get natural, intimate and relaxed photos while breastfeeding. Baby F was really curious about me and what I was up to with my camera, but quickly relaxed and got stuck into some gymnurstics!
Fionnuala's Breastfeeding Journey
"I had an emergency c section and we remained in hospital for 1 week as she lost 10% birth weight. The first few day were overwhelming as she wouldn't latch and was extremely distressed when I tried to feed her. I spent 3 days persevering before making any progress. During this time I expressed by hand and she fed by syringe. The added difficulty of recovering from surgery meant I struggled to hold her so I needed physical help each feed. However with incredible support from the hospital staff, I left feeling somewhat confident I could continue exclusively breastfeeding.
The following 12 weeks of establishing feeding were tough as I struggled with positioning her and often endured discomfort. The feeding on demand and cluster feeding was so full-on I never anticipated just how demanding it would be. I wanted to give up on several occasions but she was also refusing bottles so kept going with it out of necessity.
From 4 months onwards it became easier in every way. I feel lucky and grateful to still be able to continue breastfeeding 9 months in. I'm aware in many ways it has been a straightforward enough journey. Despite this, I feel breastfeeding is still a huge commitment and achievement for any mum. In my experience it is still not normalised, talked about or celebrated enough."
Normalise and Celebrate.
I'm going to keep banging this drum until all mothers realise how incredible they are.
I've yet to meet a mother who found the journey easy. It's been such an insight doing these sessions and hearing every story. You are so strong and determined!
A huge thank-you to Fionnuala and all the Mums from 2020 who were so open with sharing their experiences. I believe all your stories need to be told, shared and want you to have beautiful photos documenting (and celebrating) your breastfeeding journey.
By sharing these words and photos, it can only help prepare future parents and first time breastfeeding parents; comfort and encourage parents who are currently struggling.
